The Benefits of TEAM Travel in Age Group Swimming!

September 30, 2026

Hello TEAM,

Swimming is often an individual sport—but team travel is where the team part really comes alive. For age-group swimmers, travelling to meets with their teammates can be one of the most valuable parts of their swimming experience. It is about much more than racing.

Building Team Culture

Away from the pool, swimmers spend time together, support each other, laugh, share meals and experience new places. These experiences create friendships and a stronger sense of belonging.

Learning Independence

Team travel gives young athletes opportunities to make decisions, manage their belongings, follow schedules and take responsibility for themselves. These small experiences help develop confidence and independence.

Learning to Support Others

Swimmers learn that being a teammate isn’t just about swimming fast. Cheering behind the blocks, helping a teammate prepare for a race, celebrating a personal best and supporting someone after a tough swim are all part of being on a team.

Developing Competition Skills

Travelling for meets exposes swimmers to different pools, competitors and environments. They learn how to prepare, warm up, race and recover outside of their normal routine—which can build valuable competition experience.

Creating Memories

Some of the best memories athletes take from swimming don’t come from medals. They come from the bus rides, hotel breakfasts, late-night laughs, team cheers and shared experiences with friends.

A Partnership With Parents

Team travel also gives parents an opportunity to let their swimmer take a little more ownership. It can be hard to step back, but allowing athletes to experience the responsibility of team travel is an important part of long-term athlete development.

The goal isn’t simply to travel to a swim meet. It’s to travel as a team.

When done well, team travel helps young swimmers become better competitors, better teammates and more confident young people—while creating memories they’ll carry long after their swimming careers are over.
